MsWindowsMicrosoft Windows is the result of many years of evil scheming and bad decisions.
MsWindows has as its ancestor MsDOS, which was Microsoft's answer to CP/M. MsDOS was based largely upon QDOS which was originally intended just to be a hardware testing OS, and never as a RealOS. Because of many shortcomings of MsDOS (look 'em up on [Google] if you don't know them), MsWindows has had many shortcomings over the years such as the ["640k limit"].
The latest incarnations of MsWindows at the time of this writing (namely, 2000 & the XP strand) have fixed many of the previous problems, but still aren't RealOSes. Sure, they crash a lot less, and they seem to be able to handle more network traffic ([Hotmail] was running FreeBSD up until this last year when W2k could finally support the traffic and they [switched]), but it's still the least secure OS I know. There's new vulnerabilities and virus alerts every day. It's just too easy to crack.
Plus, the biggest problem is that the OS does not scale well at all. It is geared towards a desktop usage, so it's hard to squish down into an EmbeddedOS, and doesn't scale cleanly up to a ServerOS.
At any rate, I hate the OS... I don't really use it much.... Except at MyJob, where I spend most of my time making it play nice with other RealOSes like Linux.
