UNIX02/Setup Mailing Lists

Classnotes | UNIX02 | RecentChanges | Preferences

Part I

If you haven't already, then install GNU Mailman (package mailman-2.0.9-1.i386.rpm on disc 3 of Red Hat 7.3)

The president of Odyssey, Inc., Hal Neun Tausend, wants to have mailing lists for the Sales and Public Relations offices. He wants a mailing list called 'sales-list' for Sales and a mailing list called 'pr-list' for Public Relations. He wants the members of each office to be on their respective list (see /Setting Up Shares By Office for a reminder of the office structure). He also wants to be subscribed to both mailing list.

Using GNU Mailman, make theses lists for him, and test them out.

GNU Mailman under Red Hat 7.3 installs most of its files into /var/mailman. However, when you install Mailman from source, it will go into /home/mailman.

The first thing you will want to do is make the listinfo script and archives available from the web-page. These are located in /var/mailman/scripts and /var/mailman/archives/public.

Next, you will want to create the scripts themselves. Mailman has a script for creating new lists in /var/mailman/bin/newlist.

Finally, you will want to use the web interface to add the appropriate users into their associated list.

Part 2

Six months have past, and Frank and Dave are beginning to complain about the excessive abuse and flame-wars on their lists. They want an administrative list just for those administrators at Odyssey, Inc.

Hal Neun Tausend has agreed, and has charged you (the system administrator) with creating a new 'admin-list' list. The list must have private archives which are password protected (Hal does not want the staff accessing them) and it must contain you (root), Hal, Frank, and Dave.

Part 3

Another six months have passed, and Hal now wants a publically accessable 'support-list' for support requests to the company. The list should be open to all, and (against your better judgement) it is being set up to allow anyone to post. Hal also wants the archives to be set up publically readable.
