UNIX01/Modern UNIXes

At the time of this writing, there are much fewer UNIXes around than there were several years ago. This is largely because Linux in recent years has been eating away at the UNIX user base and many UNIX vendors have taken the "if you can't beat 'em, join em" approach. For example, when HP aquired Compaq they decided to kill the Tru64 UNIX line in favor of using Linux in the future. IBM has been moving away from AIX in favor of Linux (which they see as a way to rejuvinate their mainframe sales). Even Sun has been partnering with Linux vendors like Red Hat to offer Linux preinstalled on Sun hardware.

However, you still do have quite a bit of choice with respect to non-Linux systems. Here is a small sampling:

  • BSD Strains
There are many flavors of BSD due to a fork which occured in the mid 1990s. We will examine these in UNIX02, but for now, here are the various BSDs available:
